Diabetic Foot Care: A Daily Checklist to Prevent Complications

Your feet don't get a timeout

Diabetes doesn't care if you're an athlete, a weekend warrior, or just trying to get through the week. Left unchecked, it can turn a small blister into a real problem fast. Here's how to stay ahead of it.

Why daily foot checks matter

Diabetes can dull the feeling in your feet and slow down healing. That means an injury you'd normally notice right away, like a blister from a new pair of shoes, or a scrape from the turf, can go undetected until it's already infected.

The daily checklist

  • Check both feet, top and bottom, every single day
  • Wash, dry, and moisturize, but skip the lotion between the toes
  • Look inside your shoes before you lace up
  • Trim nails straight across, no rounding the corners
  • Never go barefoot, even at home
  • Watch for any spot that's unusually warm, cool, numb, or discolored

When it's time to get it looked at

How do I know if something is wrong? Any sore, cut, or red spot that isn't clearly healing in a day or two. Don't push through it.

How often do I need a diabetic foot check? At least once a year. More often if you've already got nerve or circulation issues.

What happens at the appointment? A full check of circulation, sensation, and skin. It's quick and thorough.
